Type2 Bay T25 type4 Flywheel felt ring retainer
The flywheel on Type 4 and Waterboxer engines is fitted with a felt ring which is intended to keep the grease in the crankshaft needle bearing in place and prevent dust from entering the clutch plate.
The flywheel is fitted with a felt ring holder which is intended to ensure that the felt ring stays in place, and the combination of felt ring and holder can be thought of as a kind of retaining ring. If the plug has come into contact with the felt ring holder during engine assembly or disassembly, there's a good chance that the rim will be damaged, which is why many flywheels are equipped with a felt ring holder that needs to be replaced. In addition, new flywheels are not fitted with a felt ring holder at the factory, so it must be ordered as an extra.
Volkswagen has never supplied this felt ring holder separately, so once damaged, you'd have to rely on a new flywheel. With this precision felt ring holder, you no longer need a new flywheel. Remove the old flywheel holder by tapping on it, and gently insert the new holder until it's a little deeper than the inside of the flywheel. Fit a new felt ring and you can be sure that dust and grease won't stand a chance.
Note: the felt ring holder is covered with a film of oil to prevent corrosion during storage. Carefully degrease the bracket and flywheel interfaces, then press the felt ring into place.
