A collision, in which the stub axle has been deformed, may be a reason for a replacement, but very often the cause is the owner who has driven with worn bearings for too long. As a result, the bearing surface of the stub axle may have worn away or, in extreme cases, been partially burned away.
If the keyways have disappeared, you can talk to the mechanic, if the rear axle nut is not tightened to the proper torque, backlash occurs and the keyways may be damaged to the point that you need to replace both the drum and the stub axle.
