If the distributor drive pinion is damaged, there is a risk that the ignition timing will be off, which can be fatal to your engine. As with any engine part, an accurate inspection is required, which saves a lot of trouble later on. Make sure your old drive pinion is reusable and replace it if in doubt.
To remove the pinion from the crankcase and later also to replace it, an extractor is not an unnecessary luxury. Without this extractor, the work will take a long time, with the extractor it is a matter of minutes.
Note: First place the adjusting rings in the crank. Use a little grease to hold the adjusting rings in place when mounting the pinion. Then insert the pinion into the crankcase. If you want to place the rings around the pinion in the crank afterwards, you will find that you cannot pass behind the pinion.
