Type2 Split Urethane bushing kit, front beam 4.1955 until 7.1963
The original front axle is fitted as standard with needle bearings at the ends and bronze bushings inside to allow the support arms to move smoothly. Between these parts, play can occur that affects handling. Especially for the handling perfectionists, these needle bearings and bronze bushings can be replaced by the unique material "Urethane". These urethane bushings guarantee that play-free operation has no chance and that the assembly will continue to run smoothly.
Urethane is practically indestructible and has a self-lubricating effect, so that the front axle does not need to be greased any more. For the Volkswagen Beetle, Karmann Ghia and VW Thing, there are two possibilities: either you replace both needle bearings and bronze bushings (in which case you make the most of your urethane), or you replace only the outer needle bearings, in which case you keep the bronze bushings intact.
For the front axles of the Volkswagen Beetle and Karmann Ghia until July 1965, the complete bearings, both top and bottom, are in one piece, while for the front axles from August 1965, only the top bearing is in one piece and the bottom bearing is in two parts. For the VW Bus, there is only one possibility, the bronze bearings and bushings are replaced by urethane and are, for all production years, in one piece. The old needle bearings can be removed using a bearing extractor and the bronze rings (located inside the front axle) can be removed using an expanding ring extractor, or you can carefully break them up so that they come out in pieces. It is available in sets for the left and right booms.
Note: The urethane bushings for the Volkswagen Beetle and Karmann Ghia until July 1965 are only applicable if the front axle is equipped with needle bearings with not the Micarta plain bearings found in some front axle imitations (all our front axles are equipped with needle bearings as originally). For all VW models, grease marks are no longer necessary when using urethane.
